The Story Behind the Stories
Carlo Damus came to writing the way most writers do — through an insatiable need to make sense of the world. Growing up surrounded by stories of resilience, faith, and the quiet heroism of everyday people, he found that fiction was the only medium wide enough to hold everything he wanted to say.
His debut novel, River of Jezebels, announced a voice unafraid of moral complexity — a story where survival and sin are two sides of the same coin, and where mercy arrives in the most unexpected forms. The book established the themes that would run through all his work: the weight of the past, the possibility of redemption, and the stubborn persistence of love.
Chaos Sixty-Eight took him into historical territory, reconstructing the turbulent year of 1968 through the lives of ordinary people caught in extraordinary times. In The Shadows Still We Love — his most intimate work — earned a perfect five-star reader rating and cemented his reputation as a writer who understands the human heart.
His French-language novel, L'Invention de la Miséricorde, reflects his belief that great stories belong to no single language or culture. He continues to write, to read voraciously, and to believe that every story worth telling begins with a single honest sentence.
